Emergency non-traumatic abdominal surgery
Emergency non-traumatic abdominal surgery
EDITOR'S WORD
Emergency surgery, as a field of general surgery, was established only at the beginning of this millennium, although it is based on the centuries-old history of general and military surgery. American Society of trauma surgery eng. American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, AAST and the American College of Surgeons Trauma Committee eng. American College of. ACS Surgeons have officially defined the field of emergency general surgery. Emergency general Surgery as special specialties in 2003. year.
The book "Emergency non-traumatic abdominal surgery" was written at the initiative of the professors of the teaching base emergency surgery department of mfub, who are the editors of the book and at the same time the founders of the Serbian association of emergency surgery SUUH, December 2022. The idea for this complex book, as the first modern book with the topic of emergency surgery in Serbian, came from the need to present the basic attitudes in emergency surgery, based on evidence, to Serbian doctors in a unified and native language. The book thematically deals with all emergency abdominal conditions that require surgical treatment , as well as modern modalities in treatment. In terms of diagnoses, an insight was given into the urgent surgical pathology of the entire digestive tube, as well as the borderline-differential diagnostic areas of gynecology, urology and vascular surgery. The entire procedure for the care of patients with acute abdomen, sepsis or bleeding is presented, from diagnostic methods to surgical procedures, including minimally invasive surgical techniques, interventional radiological procedures, endoscopy. The importance of abdominal sepsis, surgical infection, hospital infection and infection control was highlighted.
The content of the book is systematized in 36 chapters, which are divided into 3 areas:
AN INTRODUCTION TO EMERGENCY SURGERY,
The optimization of the patient and
AN ORGAN-SPECIFIC PATHOLOGY.
Due to the modern concept of emergency surgery, which is now multidisciplinary, not only general surgeons are involved in the work on this book, but also gastroentreologists, radiologists, anesthesiologists, Gynecologists, urologists and epidemiologists. The number of authors is 73, among which are authors from abroad:
Prof Fausto Catena, University of Bologna Italy, Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences; emergency Surgery Bufalini Hospital AUSL Romagna Cesena, Italy,
Prof Federico Coccolini University of Pisa, Italy, General, Emergency and Trauma Surgery Department University Hospital Pisa, Italy and
dr Amr Ahmed Chief of robotic surgery Department of Urology & Robotic Surgery, Varisano Kliniken Frankfurt-Main-Taunus, Bad Soden, Germany.
Professors Coccolini and Catena are the founders of the world Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES) 2007. and are the editors of Traumatic and Non traumatic Surgical Emergencies, published in 2023. published by Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
The book "Emergency non-traumatic abdominal surgery" is intended for postgraduate training of doctors, especially those who in their practice have urgent patients with acute pathology of the digestive tract, specialists and specialist surgeons, but also anesthesiologists, radiologists, emergency medicine specialists and others. The book is written with the aim of helping colleagues when they find themselves in a situation to treat an urgent surgical patient, especially doctors who work in difficult night shifts, when the emergency scenario is dynamic, and the surgeon and his team are expected to make a saving decision, expertise, knowledge and skill in saving lives.
The book is not intended for decor in the library. She seeks to be a living companion of the residents on their thorny journey of learning and work, and an advisor to experienced surgeons in challenging and unclear situations, which are certain to follow us all to the end of our careers.

Liver surgery with operative techniques
Liver surgery with operative techniques
In the past decade, liver surgery has experienced great momentum with high safety, thanks to a better understanding of anatomy, improvement of modern technologies and significant multidisciplinary approach, in all segments, especially in the field of laparoscopic, robotic, extensive and transplantation surgery. In the absence of a modern text that comprehensively deals with surgical pathology of the liver with a detailed presentation of surgical techniques and procedures on the liver, both in our country and in the region, this book is gaining importance.
After 25 years of active HPB surgery, and especially liver surgery, I gave myself the right to do such a work. My dear friends, esteemed colleagues, experts in liver diseases and liver surgery from Belgrade, the region, Europe and Asia, but also my young assistants and associates from the Surgical Clinic “Nikola Spasić” of the ZVEZDARA Clinical Center in Belgrade, who enabled the realization of this joint project. I thank everyone for their great support and cooperation. After more than two years of dedicated work, we are proud and pleased to present our work, which has been accepted as a textbook by the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, for postgraduate teaching.
Liver surgery is becoming more and more current for abdominal and general surgeons. This type of surgery is in some way demystified by the unlimited possibilities of communication and the acquisition of knowledge through electronic media, which are available to everyone interested in this field. In the hands of skilled surgeons, who have extensive experience gained by a sufficient number of successfully performed liver procedures, liver surgery has become daily and safe.
The aim of this book is to present liver surgery to all general and abdominal surgeons, residents of these branches, especially those dealing with liver pathology, as well as doctors of other specialties involved in multidisciplinary treatment of liver diseases. The book provides modern surgical Anatomy and anatomical surgery with current anatomical terminology, as well as the terminology of resection procedures, then the basics of functional and Radiological diagnostics with Interventional radiological procedures on the liver. Clearly and concisely, the foundations of decision-making on the type of surgical treatment are given, as well as a detailed presentation of various surgical techniques, including liver resections, laparoscopic, robotic surgery, as well as liver transplantation, taking into account the nature and localization of the pathological process, anatomical relationships and variations. Complications that occur during surgery and in the postoperative course, the principles of postoperative care of patients, as well as problems of liver reoperations are presented.
In a way, this textbook comprehensively presents sophisticated liver surgery, but it should not be forgotten that only a large number and scope of surgery results in adequate surgical experience, which guarantees top-notch and safe liver surgery. In a modern way, with numerous original photographs, sketches, tables and highlighting the most important principles, this textbook is, in fact, a manual to the surgeon, in which everyone can quickly and easily manage and obtain the required information and knowledge. I hope that this work will fulfill its mission and find a way to those who are interested in this surgery.

Anesthesiology-1-2 theoretical and practical foundations of modern clinical practice
Anesthesiology-1-2 theoretical and practical foundations of modern clinical practice
Publisher: University of Kragujevac, Faculty of Medical Sciences, 2023.
Anesthesiology is highly contagious. When young doctors decide to volunteer at the clinic where I work, I carefully warn them about the risk they are taking. Not much time passes and it is already too late, as one cannot easily get out of the delicate, complicated and powerful web that anesthesia unobtrusively weaves. The future life of these young people is defined. Throughout the history of medicine, it is best understood how powerful was the primordial need of man to discover anesthesia. And when he succeeded, everything gained wings, and on the wings of anesthesia surgery (medicine) reached unimaginable limits. Anesthesia fascinates, because there is still a lot of unknown and intriguing in it. It is truly amazing that after only a few milliliters of a miraculous substance that the anesthesiologist injects into the vein of his patient, this man becomes completely dependent on the anesthesiologist. He no longer breathes, does not move, and leaves the most vital functions to his doctor. Is there a better example of greater trust and responsibility? Anesthesia quickly tells you whether or not you have done something right. In some ways anesthesia is divine, because it is divine work to remove pain. At the same time, it is a mining business. Every day you enter the operating room before everyone else, and leave it last. You worry about your patient every day: is he in deep enough anesthesia? Will his heart hold? How will he wake up? How will he breathe? With the most difficult patients, you are in the ICU every day. There is a lot of genuine suffering to be endured, and the life of an anesthesiologist is once again one and unique. Certainly, the choice is conscious and should be carried with dignity and courage. The only way to get through everything with as little difficulty as possible is to learn the job well. The work is learned constantly, with patients, from teachers and from books. Teachers are important, because they guide and motivate you, and you need to be respected so that tomorrow you will be respected by those you teach. When I finished my specialization and thought I had learned everything, I was given one of the most significant lessons of my professional life. I would like to share it with all of you who have chosen to call anesthesiologist. Immediately after completing my specialization, full of knowledge, and a little of myself, I often complained about some things that were not working for me. Then an old, experienced anesthetist said to me, " Doctor, you are neither the first nor the last, it has always been so. The first year after specialization, your drugs are to blame for everything, the next are anaesthetists, and only the third year you slowly realize that you are responsible for everything that does not work for you. The way out of this situation is learning. There is no end to learning in anesthesiology, because it is not only a job but a vocation that constantly puts greater and new demands on you. Only through continuous learning can you endure many difficulties this time. The stress that anesthesiologists carry is unusual, enormous, and sometimes unimaginably superhuman. Working with the most difficult patients, this is exactly what anesthesiologists experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. They gave themselves heroically, often beyond their own borders, and in the conditions of one of the greatest cataclysms the world remembers. I had the opportunity to talk to many of my colleagues. Everyone agreed: we do not have one comprehensive textbook of anesthesiology to learn from. The book was published a long time ago, more than twenty years ago. Later, quality books by other professors of anesthesiology were written, but none covered all aspects of our specialty. With this thought and idea I embarked on the venture of creating a new book of anesthesiology, which would contain the knowledge of authors from different branches of Medical Sciences. At the time, I didn't even realize what kind of adventure I was getting into. All I know is that I wanted to hire as many anesthesiologists as possible, but also specialists of other branches of medicine, who with their experience and knowledge can leave a worthy mark, and with which young people will continue to go. I gathered teachers and associates from all over Serbia, and beyond, from numerous universities, as well as anaesthesiologists who have earned the great respect of their colleagues through their professional work. I felt it was worth a try and that feeling gave me the strength to persevere when it was hard. Editing a book like this is a big and hard job. The strength, will and faith to persevere in my work was given to me by all my family, wife and children. I am grateful to all the authors who participated in the writing of this book, especially to my colleagues from work who truly understood and cheered me all the time, eagerly waiting for the book to be shaped and published. Whether and how all the important and necessary aspects of anesthesiology are treated, will be judged by the readers to whom this book is intended, anesthesiology specialists and specialists, who know well how important and necessary it is to constantly learn. In the future, anesthesiology will become more complex and in demand. With the awareness of such requirements, anesthesiologists choose to live a life full of challenges. I wish them luck on the path they have chosen. I hope they learn from this book Why anesthesiology is an endless story of fear, hope and love for life.

Publisher: Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, PE Institute for textbooks and association of neurosurgeons of Serbia, Belgrade, 2020
Surgery of the peripheral nervous system-multidisciplinary approach, edited by prof. Dr. Lukas Rasulić, as a co-publishing venture of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, PE Institute for textbooks and the Association of neurosurgeons of Serbia, represents a major work of exceptional importance in the field of Medical Sciences.
The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Belgrade has made its decision the Council for specialist teaching 04 No. 39 -128 / 40-15, dated 11-18-2020., recognized this capital work, accepted the positive review and approved the use of this book for postgraduate training of Physicians.
The book peripheral nervous system surgery-a multidisciplinary approach is the first comprehensive edition that deals transdisciplinarily with peripheral nervous system surgery and is the result of a long-standing joint effort of 55 individuals who have dedicated their professional career to various aspects of the subject area.
The concept of the book is a combination of a classic textbook and a modern thematic manual, and the authors of the chapter are the most famous experts from certain segments of the subject area in Serbia. The book provides a comprehensive insight into modern knowledge about all problems of pathology of the peripheral nervous system, with special emphasis on practical knowledge about diagnostics and therapy. The cpjida has a total of 630 pages (5 parts with 33 chapters on 586 pages), 313 images (all of which are intraoperative photographs taken during operations performed by the editors and authors of the Chapter), 55 tables and 3 charts, and is intended for active surgeons, who are engaged in this field, as well as other experts of various specialties, such as neurosurgeons, orthopedists, vascular and plastic surgeons, physiatrists, neurologists, radiologists, neurophysiologists, but also all other physicians involved in diagnosing and treating patients with peripheral nerve injuries and diseases.
Peripheral nervous system surgery is one of the areas of medicine located in" no man's land", among otherwise well-defined areas, and often remains almost unnoticed, due to the belief that it is the expertise of others. The importance of this book is reflected in the fact that no book so far has presented this area taking into account all aspects, and even over 40% of the population suffers from various types of pathology of the peripheral nervous system. The Republic of Serbia has one of the world's most recognized experts in this field. Prof. Dr. Lukas Rasulić has gained the trust of the international neurosurgical community due to the merit for the professional and scientific development of this field and is currently the chairman of the committee for peripheral nervous system surgery within the two largest world neurosurgical associations – European Association of neurosurgical associations (EANS) and World Federation of neurosurgical associations (WFNS). With his knowledge, knowledge and authority, Dr. Dr. Lukas Rasulić managed to gather not only his colleagues neurosurgeons, but also the most eminent experts from other fields of Medical Sciences – neurologists, physiatrists, plastic surgeons, orthopedists, vascular surgeons, radiologists, pediatricians, physiologists and anesthesiologists, who, in this book, pointed out the importance of applying a multidisciplinary approach in the treatment of injuries and diseases of the peripheral nervous system.
This book offers readers a modern comprehensive approach to peripheral nervous system surgery, providing the necessary knowledge to all who are interested in the treatment of patients with injuries and diseases of the peripheral nervous system in everyday practice. It can be used as a consultative manual for experienced specialists, but it can also give the necessary guidance to physicians who are before the decision to choose a specialization and intend to dedicate their professional development and career continuation to this area.

Colon cancer - from prevention to carcinogenesis to metastasis
Colon cancer - from prevention to carcinogenesis to metastasis
Publisher: Institute for textbooks
The Academy committee for biomedical research of the SANU, within the cycle of conferences on public health problems in Serbia, organized a scientific meeting with the inspirational title "colon cancer – from carcinogenesis to metastasis" (Belgrade, 23. April 2018. years). That task went to Professor Zoran V. Krivokapić, a corresponding member of the SANU, our excellent surgeon and expert when it comes to knowledge and treatment of this vicious disease. He was helped by a selected team of exceptional experts from various scientific fields that are relevant and essential for good knowledge and successful treatment, including the treatment of colon cancer.
There were 19 papers published, which, adapted to a suitable written form, are collectively published as a significant scientific monograph. This was enabled by the competence of the authors and the high scientific level of published papers, which allowed the usual form of the collected books to be overcome and transformed into a kind of valuable monograph, worthy of international reputation.
The topics are divided into three chapters whose titles reflect their interconnectedness.
The first chapter at the beginning presents the modern epidemiological trends of colorectal cancer in the world, in which it is the third cause of disease and the fourth cause of death among solid malignant tumors. In Serbia, colon cancer is second on the list of solid malignant tumors, after lung cancer in men and breast cancer in women. It is the second cause of death in men and the third cause of death in women. Serbia is among the countries with a high mortality rate and a slightly lower incidence of this disease.
The key factors in the appearance of colorectal cancer are specific oncogenic and tumor suppressor genes whose mutual influences and mutations over time disrupt the cell cycle, and from the healthy lining of the colon, through benign lesions and premalignant polyps, an invasive malignant tumor is formed and develops. In particular, we talk about chromosomal and microsatellite instability (Lynch syndrome, etc.), as well as on gene mutation.
Colorectal cancer is manifested in three clinical variants-sporadic, familial, and congenital. Its occasional occurrence is the most common, while others are very rare. A special group consists of hereditary non-polypoid colon cancers, and there are other congenital cancer syndromes (Gardner, Pojc-Jegers, etc.) that form the genetic underpinning for its development.
Man is in his biological nature an omnivore with a prevalence of carnivores. Meat is an energy that the human species has been consuming with pleasure since its beginnings. This is why the monograph considers the carcinogenic potential of the so-called. "red meat", its heat treatment, as well as meat products that modern man uses abundantly and uncritically in his diet. However, meat should not be characterized a priori and negatively, as it is vital for the human species as an important energy source; it only needs to be blended moderately and balanced with foods rich in plant fiber and antioxidants…

In several chapters, the authors presented diagnostic procedures that allow adequate preparation and making the right decision for the scope and type of surgical intervention, without neglecting the possibility of incl. the use of nuclear diagnostic medical procedures, which may be, among other things, the final therapeutic option. An extremely important part of this book is the chapters on the surgical treatment of all known diseases of the thyroid gland. As is normal for a book dedicated to the surgical treatment of a type of disease, most of it is devoted to the various aspects of surgical treatment of thyroid disease. A large assortment of surgical techniques that are adapted to the nature of the disease is presented in great detail. In these thyroid disease surgeries dedicated to chapters, the authors tried to present, in addition to the facts from the scientific literature, their many years of surgical experience. This allows us to see the connection between scientific knowledge and surgical practice.

Ischemia of the spinal cord in aortic surgery
Ischemia of the spinal cord in aortic surgery
Published by: University of Belgrade Medical School, 2014
No. page: 104
The Problem of aortic surgery has been actualized in recent years, both due to better diagnostics and the increasing influx of patients to certain centers, and due to the introduction of new technologies in the treatment of this disease through endovascular and so-called "Endovascular" Surgery. the hybrid procedure. That is why I believe that this "infusion" of modern technology into medicine has enabled sensitive diagnostics by applying safe non-invasive techniques, opened the way for new surgical techniques that are at first glance complicated, but at the same time very effective and minimally invasive, and offered better postoperative recovery and provided a greater chance for a healthier life for the population at risk of this disease.
The monograph fills a gap in the professional literature in our language that elaborates on this issue, written on the basis of personal and experience of the institution in which the author works. The special value of this monograph is in the scientific approach to analyzing problems, where the experiences of other centers dealing with the same type of surgery are also used. Therefore, the reader can accept the conclusions with full confidence and apply the proposed treatment algorithms in their daily work.
The monograph is intended for doctors who are interested in this problem, because it will find the necessary data and practical recommendations for daily practice.

Septic syndrome in abdominal surgery
Septic syndrome in abdominal surgery
The term sepsis in abdominal surgery implies the existence of an intra-abdominal septic focus, as the main driver of the nostrils of pathophysiological events. Septic complications of Intra-abdominal infection ( IAI ), have a very progressive and dynamic development, which directly endangers the life of the patient, and therefore dictate rapid diagnosis and timely and adequate therapeutic approach.
Intra-abdominal infections ( IAI) are still a serious problem in everyday surgical practice. Intra-abdominal sepsis, despite the modern approach in treatment, is burdened by a very high incidence and mortality rate ( 20-50% ). Sepsis is one of the most common and significant causes of Hospital Morbidity and mortality, especially in intensive care units. The close correlation between intra-abdominal infection and sepsis requires a very precise, fast and complex diagnostic and therapeutic approach. Progress in treatment has been made in the last decade with a partially changed and more aggressive surgical approach, but in recent years it has been exclusively in the domain of the latest knowledge related to the pathophysiology of sepsis. The latest evolution based on understanding the complex interactions and pathways between the coagulation, inflammatory and fibrinolytic Cascades has led to the rapid development of new therapeutic approaches and strategies.
